    '64 Ignition Lock Followup

I recently researched the archives and found what I believe to be an answer to my question but it does not agree with a recent judges ruling.

My ignition key can be removed when the switch is in the "Off" position. I understand this to be a correct situation for a '64; however, the judges deducted points for this. Which is correct? I understand that the Owner's Manual has info on this but I do not have access to mine at the present time.

    Thanks and best regards,
    Charlie

Charlie, this is from my 63 owners manual. I know you asked about a 64, but they should be the same. "NOTE: Key cannot be removed from the ignition switch when in OFF or ACC position..."

The OFF and ON position are real close together, ensure it wasn't in the ON position when you removed the key.

The reason not to remove the key in the OFF position is a safety feature. It's to help you avoid taking out the key, then allowing someone to start the car without the key and drive away.

According to the PV Test Guide, the key should not come out in the "off" position. This is supposedly to guard against leaving the switch off, but not locked. The confusing part is that it goes on to say the switch can be moved between off, on & start without the key. Therefore, one could remove the key in the run or start position and it would be possible to then do exactly what retaining the key in the off position is trying to prevent. On my '64, the key will come out in the off position, but I can feel some resistance as though the lock is trying to not let that happen.

        Re: '64 Ignition Lock Followup

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately my car is not available for me to confirm my key problem with regard to the "off" vs. "on" positions or to look at the lock/switch config. If I confirm that the key will come out when the switch is in the "off" position, is this something that a locksmith can normally repair or is it time for a new ignition lock?
        Thanks and best regards,

Yes, it's either the brass inside the lock cylinder or a worn key. Both are simple to fix. Try a new key first as this will be the lowest cost.

Do you have an original key with the 4 digit key code. This will help. If not, it may still be on the lock cylinder itself. It is really easy to remove the lock. You just need a key and a paper clip. Insert and turn past ACC. then gently pull it out.

A general rule I follow, anytime I mess with an electrical component, I disconnect the battery.

Thanks Harry. My key is a recent cut so problem may be with the lock. Once I confirm that the key can be removed at "off", I'll take it from there. Instrument panel is presently out of the car. Appreciate the help.
