I'm looking for good quality paints that would reproduce the '74 gauge cluster and shifter plate original colors. (The NCRS judging manual says the gauge cluster is "semi gloss black", and the shifter plate is "satin black".) Any suggestions?
Re: Correct paint for 74 gauge cluster/shifter pla
Hi Pedro:
There is a speciality paint on the automotive market called Black Satin, it is specially designed to be applied over chrome and lays down very well, I think it is an accurate match for your shifter plate. I am not certain but I believe the guage cluster should exibit the same color, if so the same paint will apply just as well on most any surface that you would normally paint.
...is one of the suggestions you will find in the Archives. It has been an old standby for many here. I've used it on more stuff than I would want to admit, but one of them was my former 1966 steering column. It is available in a spray can at most hardware stores. Hope this helps Pedro. TBarr #24014
ONE source is Davies Corvette Supply, I'm sure there are more, I haven't looked for it elsewhere because Davies is close by but they will ship to you and remember this paint is specifically formulated to be applied over chrome and therefore is excellent for your application.
I have used this paint for so much that I ought to hang a Krylon sign off of the side of my car. It closely matches so many semi-gloss/semi-flat needs that I don't even bother with the other Corvette suppliers. Krylon is about $3 a can. The other shops will sell you "exact" matches for $6 and up. I would venture a guess that most of us couldn't tell the difference.
