'67 L89

Working on a project '67 Coupe for a customer, car has aluminum heads #3904392, dated 12-11-66, and 12-30-66, numbers on VIN are correct. What would be different or look different other than the heads and the valve covers? Different from the L71. I know they only made 16 of these car. No ducumentation with car, but the car was last titled and ran in 1977. It dosen't look like a restamp either. And teh seller didn't advertise this car as a L89 car or an L89 price. Heads were painted orange. Anybody real knowledgable with these cars?

If the car was final assembled some time late January, or later, and the engine code stamp looks correct, it's entirely possible that it's an original L89 car. Unfortunately, at this point, all you have to go on is the engine stamp. There are no other changes, from L71, that were unique to L89 that I can think of. The cyl head casting number 3904392 would be correct for all 67 L88's and L89's.

The engine orange paint on the heads and valve covers could be original. I know most will disagree because the parts book has listed chrome covers for both engines for decades but that's just not the case. I definitely remember L88's and L89's still in the crate with painted covers and heads. I also know of at least one original unrestored 67 L89 engine that still has it's orange painted heads and covers. I believe the chrome covers and unpainted cyl heads started in 1968.

I would definitely suggest to the owner of this car that he try to research it's history. Could be very well worth his time.

The body built date of the car is January 25, 1967. We are trying to locate the owners who's name is on the title. A California title from 1980. Registration papers in the glove box has owners name and address in Merced, CA. It was las registered in 1981. It still had the blue California plates on the car. I have been searching for this guy with no luck.We had bought this car from a guy who bought it from this guy about 6 months earlier. Turned out to be too much of a project from him, and I was trying to get him to sell it. But the guy we bought it from says he can't find the guys number anywhere.
