    C2 Gas Tank Replacement

    Hello,

I am going to be doing a tech seminar at our next NCRS Chapter meeting. A fellow member needs to replace the fuel tank in his '67 coupe which will be the subject of the the tech siminar. I have replaced fuel tanks in C2 before, but the cars have all had either side exhaust or the undercar exhaust was removed for replacement and the tank changed at the same time.

My question is this. Can the fuel tank in a coupe or convertible be changed without removing the mufflers? I have a 4-post drive on lift so access to the underside of the car will be no problem. Since this is going to be a club meeting activity, I'm trying to limit the amount of time it will take to do the replacement. If the mufflers need to be taken off I just need to allow some time before the meeting starts to get to the point where the tank is ready to be removed.

    Thanks,

    James West

    James,

There have been some fairly recently postings, including my own, regarding getting the filler neck centered in the body opening when installing a new tank. Would you mind letting me know if you have any problems in this regard when installing the new tank. I would recommend reusing the original tank straps, partly for this reason. (I assume you'll be installing an exact(Quanta)reproduction tank) Good luck...

In replacing my gas tank on my 66 coupe last winter I found I had to remove one muffler to gain clearance. I removed the muffler on the drivers side. I don't know if it matters if passinger or drivers side.

In regrards to the centering of the filler neck I found mine to be to far forward as well. I found I didn't bend down the flange around the tank where the straps ran thus holding the tank forward.

        James,

There is a great article on C2 Gas Tank Replacement in the Winter 2005 Restorer magazine.

          Rob,

Yes, we will be installing a Quanta tank in the car. I replaced the tank in my '64 convertible last summer using my original gas tank straps with a Quanta tank and it fit perfectly. The filler neck is centered as it should be.

          Regards,

            Hi James:

I have a 67 with under car exhaust, and I managed to replace the tank without removing the mufflers. I was able to get enough room by removing the stainless steel tail pipe extensions, the rear hanger clamps, and the transmission hanger clamps. I also loosened the connections at the exhaust manifolds.

These steps allowed the exhaust system to drop down far enough to confortably remove and replace the tank. All I had to do was feed the tank end-first between the mufflers to get it up into the tank cavity.

As I recall, it was a tight fit getting the ends of the mufflers to drop past the lower lip of the rear valence panel. You may need to remove the lower bolts that retain the valence panel to help squeeze the mufflers past the edge.

I own a 66 with under car exhaust. I concur with Joe's suggestion. I was able to remove the tank without removing the mufflers.

If N03, you will have to remove steering column ..

... to get the tank cover out either door
