I posted earlier with the wrong year. I recently was given a 1968 Coupe. The engine and tranny are gone. The hood is a 427 (unknown if original) and the suspension and interior are all intact. The tach redlines at 6000. All gauges are with car and appear original. Rearend is intact as well. Any help in identifing the correct engine and transmission for this car? Clues and things to check would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Engine and Transmission ID
If it has not been removed you could find a copy of what your 68 was built with in the dash area sometimes. I found mine in my original owner 68 behind the radio when I removed it once. Another location of the same information is glued to the gas tank to the left side of the fuel filler. In order to read the information you will have to remove the gas tank and the document due to its age and survival in the elements it has been subjected to.- Top

Re: Engine and Transmission ID
If the tach is original, the 6000 RPM redline means 350 HP 327. You can also check the differential to see if the half shafts are retained by caps or u-bolts, the caps were for the 427. Also check the stamping for the gear ratio on the underside of the diff - the 427 is different from the 327. Also check the radiator - again the SB and BB use different sizes. BB also has a 15/16" front sway bar and a 9/16" rear bar. Those are the easy things.
To tell whether it was a manual or automatic, look at the frame, the auto has a removable trans crossmember while the manual is welded in place.
Good luck,

Re: Engine and Transmission ID
Just an update: The front sway bar is 15/16". The tach redlines at 6500. I haven't checked the half-shafts or differential yet. Thanks for the inputs and assistance. Please pass-on more if you can. I realize nothing is certain in this type of venture.- Top
