Re: 40 below radiator additive
Plain water has more heat rejection capability than antifreeze. However, the antifreeze has important anticorrosion chemicals and also raises the boiling point. Some antifreeze manufactureres give directions on the package for a 30%/70% antifreeze/water mix. This would imply that at a 30% concentration, the corrosion inhibitors would be strong enough to do the job. This mix will provide a bit more heat rejection that the traditional 50/50 mix, but if you have a problem in your system, it likely won't cure it.
The two most common causes of overheating reported in these old Vettes is (1) a worn out, stopped up radiator and (2) an improper ignition timing map. Missing radiator seals and malfunctioning fan clutches also are frequently reported.
Many folks knock themselves out trying to find some cure besides replacing the radiator, but in many cases this is the only cure that works.- Top
