    C! Installation Door Handle Rod

A couple of questions regarding the installation of the interior door handle rod:
    1. There is a bracket which fits over the interior door handle shaft. When the door handle button is pushed in, a swivel that is part of that bracket pushes foward and lifts the rod which is attached to it. What holds this bracket onto the door shaft? It is not displayed in the assembly manual. The bracket hole fits over the door handle shaft (attached to the push button), but it wants to fall off. 2. The assembly manual shows that a washer and spring are fitted on the rod at one end and a cotter pin on the other end. What keeps the washer and spring from sliding down the rod? I know I must be missing something but not sure what it is. Thanks. Richard

      Richard,
I am not sure If I understand all of what you are asking, but here goes.
Original washers were just barely large enough for the rod to go into, so the washer can't make the turn. The ones sold now however, are way too big, and I usually put a couple of spot welds on the washer to prevent it from going around the bend, so to speak!

The bracket you are refering to latches into the door handle assy by inserting it into the handle and twisting it until it engages in some slots in the handle. It only engages the slots in one position. This also holds the spring tension against the button.

      Regards, John McGraw

Try putting the rod through the hole first then the washer, spring, washer, cotter pin as per 62 aim.

            Brian,
Thanks for your suggestion. It sounds as if your recommending that the spring and washer be placed adjacent to the cotter pin as opposed to placing it on the other side of the bracket. Do you happen to know the purpose of the spring and wheter it matters on what side the the bracket it is placed? Thanks again. Richard

My 57 AIM shows it the way you describe but the 62 AIM shows it the other way. I did both 57&62 the second way & they still work.
