Having looked at many pad numbers lately on 67's I have to wonder how many different size stamps were used. I have seen numbers from 1/8 th inch to 3/8 inch in height. These were all big block cars and claimed to be numbers matching. Was there that much variance in the stamps? And did it make a difference in whether the VIN number was first or last on the pad? THanks

Re: Pad numbers C-2
The correct size for the stamps is in the judging guide, as 1/4 in the engine ID and 3/16 in the VIN derivitive. Small block engines have the location of the stamps switched with respect to big-blocks due to the location of the large plug for the core hole in the head on the 427. The St louis plant requested the engine ID be located where the threaded plug is on the head, as the engine ID was stamped before the heads were assembled and the plug was interfering with the assembly plant applying the VIN stamp. This change was made starting with the 396 engines in '65.Bill Clupper #618- Top
