1966, 327/350 - wasn't idling correctly, breaking up at high RPMs...rebuilt the carb, replaced the points and condensor and now attempting to set the dwell and timing. It idles irratically, swinging from 1000 RPM to stall. When I attempt to set the dwell, there's play in the points' plate that causes the motor to advance or retard, depending upon which way the points plate moves (not the dwell adjustment screw). Is this indicative of a worn distributor shaft? Or???

Re: '66 Ignition
Dave-Your problem sounds alot like my own a couple of years ago.My 66 had a worn upper bushing which is what the breaker plate pivots on and a slot had worn in the hole where the vacuum advance rod connects to the breaker plate.Too make it worse the vacuum advance rodtip also was worn, talk about slop.As soon as i rebuilt the distributor it was like driving a new car! There should be very little play in any of the components on the distributor. Re: '66 Ignition
You might just have a worn and wobbly breaker plate. In any event you should remove the distributor and overhaul it, which will include checking the bushings for wear, replacing as necessary, and greasing the upper bushing reservoir with the GM recommended lubricant; and use the higher breaker arm tension points. If you don't feel you can do this yourself, there are competent shops that can perform this work. There have been a couple of recent threads on this issue that have more info. If they aren't on the current board, they should be in the recent archives.
