What is the pulley setup for this January 65 car. Should I have an idler pulley?? My water pump pulley has 2 grooves as does my harmonic balancer. Should the harmonic balancer have the add-on pulley giving me 3 grooves? If so what part number is it? Does anyone know? Thanks! Dick Gutman

Re: Early 65 350 HP with PS
My 65 350hp car has the idler pulley. The judging guide is open as some had the idler pulley and some didn't. My balancer and water pump pulley have 2 groves each. I'll look up the part number latter if nobody posts it.

Re: Early 65 350 HP with PS
Thanks Mike: I quized some of the more knowledgeable parts vendors at Carlisle this last weekend. Most admitted not to know. Someone must know. Is the idler pulley mounted on the PS pump side? Aren't one of the 2 grooves used for the short belt between the harmonic balancer and water pump only? If so, that leaves only one groove for the Alt. and PS pump. Someone must know. Maybe I'll call Quanta and pick their brain. Thanks- Top

Discussed earlier - click on this archives link
The 2005 archives are not yet added to the search (John W. is working on it). In meantime, click on link below. See July 29 thread on 350hp w/PS. I see the latest '65 TIM & JG (5th ed.) STILL calls for a 3-groove crank pulley (no such small block C2 Corvette animal exists).

Re: Early 65 350 HP with PS
I do not have a '65 but I do have a '65 assembly manual. All of this assumes no AC. For L79 w/ N40 it shows two groove pulley on crankshaft. Front goove drives steering pump through cast iron pump pulley 3834720. Rear groove drives water pump and alternator via alternator pulley 3829387. No alternate part numbers are given for crank or waterpump pulleys so they remain the same as L79 without the option. Of note is an added spacer in front of the alternator as well as a different slotted alternator brace to line the alternator a bit rearward from the rest of the small block options.
On the other HP engines, the idler pulley operated on the rear groove. So if the assembly manual is to be believed, you would not use either the stamped add-on crankshaft pulley or the idler pulley. Good news, fewer parts to find.- Top

Re: Early 65 350 HP with PS
Chris beat me to it..... The L79 with P/S did not have the idler pulley as it mounts to the same holes in the block as the P/S pump would. Both can't fit in the same space.
Actually, the 65 L79 only became available with N40 (P/S) late in the year. I don't know the actual production number. The N40 option used the 300hp oil pan also as the P/S piston will not clear the large sump SHP pan.
2 groove deep pulley on the crank (Std L790
2 groove deep pulley on the H2O pump (Std L79)
1 groove deep pulley on the Alt (Std L79)
1 groove deep cast iron pulley on the P/S pump (Special late 65 year only) part number above.
Belt placement and special mounts for the Alt as described above.
If you want A/C in addition to P/S, I've got all the info for that also.- Top

Re: Early 65 350 HP with PS
Paul: My car was built in the first week of January 1965. It has PS with the 350 H.P/L79. Could you please let me know where you saw this information of PS with the L79 coming out late in the year. Maybe January is what they mean by late in the year. My car is #59xx. My 65 was owned by the same family since 1970. My entire PS assembly is a spot on match to the JG in its untouched,as of now, state. It's all there. I was receiving mixed opinions of pulley setups. What I have is exactly what the PS assembly came with. Thanks! Dick Gutman- Top

Re: Early 65 350 HP with PS
Actually, if I remember correctly, I got the L79/N40 availability info from this forum somewhere. Maybe Joe L, or John H. Not really sure. It was some time ago. I've got a 64 L76, but used the 65 L79/N40 setup on mine when I added P/S.
Anyhow, if your pulley setup is as described above, I believe it to be correct.- Top

Chevrolet Service News Release -- Revisions
March 1965 issue; the stuff that pertains to Corvettes is as follows (somewhat edited [ie.shortened] by me)
1. Important mid-year change in engine line-up; introduction of L78 (we know that started late 12000 VIN); limited availability of L76 for balance of year (we know this didn't occur).
2. Goldwall 7.75 now available as option T01
3. Power steering now available with 350hp (L79)
4. Posi ratios 3.36 and 4.56 are no longer available with the 350hp engine.
Not sure if they kept the news of these releases until the March issue, or whether it means they were not in effect prior to (say) mid-March (based on the L78).- Top
