    The $85,000.00 '66 Project Car

Most Ridiculous Item Of The Day File:

While I was at the Carlisle event Thurs. and Fri., I saw a group of probably, the most overpriced cars among groups of overpriced cars. One, in particular attracted my attention. It was a 1966 all black, big block coupe. It was not even close to driver condition. It was a complete car, though, but needed full restoration throughout.
The new byword (phrase) now seems to be "original trim tag". The black cars with "original trim tag" now command insanely high prices. I wonder if this particular heap sold?
Another example of the insanity, was a restored "triple black" smallblock (365 HP, I think), for the astonishing price of $131,000. That's right, it has the "original trim tag".

Yes, Asking & recieving are two seperate issues. But the fact that these sellers ask for the moon is interesting. How was the weather & is carlisle strictly Corvettes & related? Don

Weather was fine until about 3PM on Sat, rain steady after that, Corvettes, related activities and Parts like always with a lot of "seeing old friends" mixed in...

I also noticed that prices for mid year cars were crazy. There was a white 63 near the gate 1 entrance and the asking price was $34,900. This car was a mess. Not even a good driver. Mechanically not original. Needed paint, interior and probably a lot of mechanical work. I walked by it on Sat afternoon and there was a sold sign on it.
All the mid years cars were priced over $50.000 regardless of condition. I don't know if many of them sold. I think some people just put out a high number and see if anyone bites.

Bob, I was at Carlisle and I agree with all that's been said. I attribute it to the "Barrett-Jackson Syndrome". This affliction says "I have a '67 Corvette, a '67 Corvette sold for $150K in Scottsdale, ergo, my '67 Corvette must be worth $150K"!! Anyone who has been in the hobby more than a day can see the fallacy in this line of thinking.

And then there was the 66 390 AC roadster for $110k. Appeared to be all there but needed a total restoration.

I took a long look at that $110K 66 roadster..... What a mess..... I think it was all there also, but that price was a bit much for the condition of what was there. I don't care how original it was. Looked like it just came out of the barn.

-------Several of us looked long and hard at that black 66. I talked to no one about the car but the for sale sign seemed to say that he wanted $180,000 not $80,000. I know we all got a laugh out of that.
-------Oh! It had the Grenning "Stamp of approval" on the windshield. 1st. time I have seen that. Very impressive!........Bill S

And $65k plus for a total restoration. What a deal for the car!

I know many collectors and Corvette lovers in general consider the mid years the most desirable Corvette's ever produced but have to agree with the Barrett Jackson statement. Prices are crazy, and if sellers don't get what they want they are just holding on to them. Automobile Magazine in a pick of the "Coolest 100 cars of all time" rated the 63-67 Corvette #1 against some stiff competition.

Maybe..asking $85,000 today sounds high and maybe it is...but it is only a snapshot in time.

Many of us passed on buying these cars in the $4000 range and less...and for cars that stood tall.

Take a look at price values over a 10, 20 and 30 year spread and you will get a better picture.

But before you count your money..consider the time, maintanance, insurance..and other family obligations over that 10, 20 and 30 year spread.

Looking back with hindsight..can better help see the future.

If you can afford to buy a premium car..it will return a premium over time.
