    Update on unknow 68 Coupe

Here's the latest numbers on a 68 Coupe I just received (engine and transmission missing): Intake Man. is #3963569 (extremely welded on and polished badly). Rear Housing #3871875 (H 4 7). Differential #3899743 (H 16 7) Transaxles are capped with metal sleeves. Front bar is 15/16". Flywheel #3789733 (D 15). Trim Plate reads D 02, trim 425 Paint 992 (crayon on back of seat bucket 426). Power brake booster. Tach redlines at 6500. Temp gauge redlines at 250. Oil pressure is 70. Four speed shifter plate. Console has air & defrost. AM-FM radio. Any help in narrowing my search for original type engine and tranny is greatly appreciated.

you need to see if the car was an original A.C. car - you mentioned that the car had air and defrost. In original AC cars, the highest HP available was 400 so then the Tach would have been a transplant. Also check the fuel line on the frame - if only a 3/8" supply with no return then it was a holley equipped car (400, 435, 430 HP). If there is a supply and a return then the max HP was 390.
    Good luck,
    Mark

I don't think the car is AC. The console just reads air (not air condition) in the middle left and defrost on the bottom left. Isn't that just fresh air? I honestly don't know. Thanks for your info. (I've ordered several reference books, just excited and enjoy the expert advice).

          Story behind this car

The story behind this car: The car was stored since 1979. Original owner pulled engine & tranny (and parts) to restore. He died recently. While family was at funeral, thieves broke into shop, took motor, tranny and misc. parts. Family returned following day and noticed broken window. Car was willed to me. Family couldn't tell corvette from mustang... They never understood his passion for this car.

look to see if there's a vent tube going into the top of the tank - no vent means Holley carb - 400HP or better. Also look for the build sheet.
            Good luck,

The gas tank appears original and has a vent tube coming out of the right side.

Don reading from page 17 on my original owners owner manual on the tachometer it states "The tachometer supplied with the 435 hp engine has a yellow zone from the 6300 to 6500. Don't permit the pointer to enter the red zone beyond 6500 rpm. From your later post it sounds like the thieves of your engine and transmission knew exactly what they were after and probably had known for a long time where the 427/435 engine was.

                  390 HP at most

If the car was an original big block, it was a 390 HP engine as all the higher powered cars had Holley carbs and did NOT have a fuel return line. That's assuming the gas tank is original!

P.S. people will steal any engine, not only the 435's.

Jim, the tach looks original (I know what that may mean) but it yellows at 6300 and redlines at 6500. I just posted a question for a carb. bracket found on the throttle cable...#3992376. Maybe this will lead to something. Thanks again for all the help.
