    C-1 mufflers

Were all '62 mufflers and exhaust pipes originally painted? Thanks Terry #43499

As Rob mentions they were black. But only partially from the black-out paint sprayed in the wheel wells, as I remember.

Actually the exhaust was painted with a paint mitt. The mitt dipped in paint was run down the length of the exhaust system to minimize any reflection to, in the words of Zora Duntov to distract the eyes from the undercarrage.

Actually, more than casual overspray from wheel well blackout, it was intentionally done before the chassis was mated to the body, and was done, I understand, with the chassis inverted. (The majority of the paint then was on the bottom of the system, which was what GM desired.) It didn't last long, primarily because the exhaust system was not at all prepped for paint, so it had oils, etc. on it, and secondarily, because it would burn off. Look at a C5 muffler blackout done today--they are peeling within a couple of thousand miles.

The nice thing about blacking them out for judging is, that if properly blacked out,the judge can't see if it is aluminized or carbon steel. If He can't see the aluminized, he can't deduct for it! LOL

"Mitting" is an "urban legend" that refuses to die; there was NO "mitting" of exhaust systems (or of anything else, for that matter). The chassis blackout paint was applied with an airless spray rig fed by Johnstone pumps in 55-gallon drums in a canvas-walled booth just prior to body drop.
