    C3 Alternator

My correctly dated 1100882 alternator for my '69 needs to be rebuilt. I'm going to utilize John Pirkle's services for the rebuild but I'm on the fence with regards to cleaning the case. If I had a survivor car then I would not consider having the case cleaned.

I talked to John at Carlisle and he said the proprietary cleaning process he uses will not damage the numbers.

From a judging perspective is it better to clean it or leave it looking like a survivor?

    Pat,

Since you have the original correct alternator for your car you may be able to have it rebuilt locally. You can tell the local guy what finish your looking for and they should be able to accomodate you. I don't think cleaning should hurt the part numbere since they are stamped in the case. I did this with my 69 and lost no judging points. The cost was very reasonable, it was rebuilt in a day, no shipping costs, and I was sure that I got mine back. John Pirkle does excellent work and I purchased my starter motor from him in order to get a correct one with the appropriate date code. If you feel more comfortable with having John do the work then that's an excellent way to go.

If the car is restored, the case needs to be restored. And old finish with everthing else new would stand out. John is the best source for refinishing. His process DOES NOT damage the numbers.

Good point. The car is being restored and that would stick out, thanks!

I had my alternator for my 68 restoration rebuilt by John Pirkle and it came back absolutely perfect. No numbers were damaged and it looked like a brand new alternator. Absolutely gorgeous and works perfect. Highly recommend John's work.
