    Title Search

I recently purchased a '70 LT-1 roadster which has a 4:11 rear end from a '64. I would like to try to find the original rear end (all of the other major components are original), and want to contact previous owners of the car to find out when and why the rear end was changed. The car was originally sold in Pennsylvania and the last two owners (covering '90 to date) live in Massachussetts. I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and have no idea how to go about tracing title in the U.S. I presume that there is an organized manner in which I should be proceeding.

Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

    Hi Leon,

So, you found a car! Great! Shall I sign you up to our judging meet in St. Sauveur?

If you primarily want to know what ratio your car originally came with, you may want to see if your tank sticker is still in place and is legible. You may find that it is easier to find a replacement but correct diff. than to track down the original. There is lots of info in the archives about tracing origins of cars (or ask Rick Snow) and I have to tell you it can be a very frustrating experience. Canada is no better or worse than the US, but state regulations usually mean that the information is just not available to the public.

    I'm sure others will comment.

Looking forward to seeing your car!

Tryu doing a search for Dept of Motor Vehicles for the states you want. They usually have on-line forms to request a title history. You have to mark a reason for the request, so most people put they are trying to verify the car is not stolen. You need to do this quickly because most states only keep records for 5 years or so. Good luck.

There is a WEB site that does title research for about $40. Only problem is I don't recall their address! It's something like www.USSearch.com. You might try searching for it using one of Alta Vista, Yahoo, etc.

If you go to the DMVs yourself its much cheaper. Wisconsin just did one for me in a couple of weeks and charged me $7.50 and provided me with a copy of the title in the name of the person I bought it from and the only other paperwork submitted on it in the last 5 years.
