    1976-1982 Convertible?

    Hi all,

    Does anyone know of any 1976 to 1982 coupes that were made into convertibles?

    - If so;

    - Did any companies specialize in this?

    - Which company made the best ones?

    - Does anyone know how many that was made from each year?

    - Is there any NCRS documentation covering this?

    Best Regards/Mikael

    I have seen them for sale by owners who have made them. NCRS judges Corvettes as they came from the factory. Their would be no records to how many were made in owners garages. Lyle

        In the very late 1970's, Fronrath Chevrolet in Fort Lauderdale had Corvette Convertible conversions on their showroom floor. Although I didn't inquire, I got the impression they were built nearby in South Florida. Maybe an NCRS member living there at that time may have more details. Jim Weeks - Member #2978

          Mikael, I doubt there is any NCRS documentation on these cars.The reason being that NCRS jusdges the car as it left the factory. As no 76-82 Corvette left the factory as a ragtop, NCRS would not have any reason to keep a record of them. Any such "built" convertible would take a very serious judging hit.I seem to recall that there were several companies that did such a conversion, possibly American Sunroof, one of GM's major aftermarket builders (80's Camaro convertibles, early T-tops for example). On the ones I've seen, the quality was less than perfect and leaks and rattles were common.

            You might be thinking of the white over red "Duntov" Convertibles that were made (around 80-81?) They were pretty nice quality.

            I had an '81 convertible converstion that was all '81 body and interior parts with the '75 rear clip and top. Very nice, liked it a lot. Corvette Fever did a 2 page spread on it in the early '90's.

              I think Intermeccanica created some of the C3 convertibles.

                No, I'm familiar with the Duntov Convertibles. One of the local members had one. The convertibles sold at Fronrath Chevrolet were brand new Corvettes converted especially for them. Still had their factory window sticker plus the dealer add-on sticker for the conversion. They were done well and very expensive. Fronrath always had a number of special cars available.
