    68 coupe 4-spd 435hp

What GM part number would be on the bellhousing of a 435hp engine? The flywheel is #3789733 (D 15)?

Don does this mean the scoundrel thieves did not steal the bell housing?

Jim, the engine and tranny were dismantled and stored inside a garage awaiting restoration. They left heads (alum.),intake manifold from BB '70, bellhousing (621), flywheel. I found in a box one carb. (it is the middle holly for a 3X2 set up '68) All numbers so far are coming back as 435hp except gas tank. But I haven't determined if it is original (it looks like it though).

Does it have the transistor ignition box on the driver's side (not sure where the 68 is mounted but in 69 on the front of the inner fender in front of the radiator) or the holes for it? How about the original distributor?

check the underside of the differential, what code is listed. Certain ratios were only available with certain engines - ie: FB is for 427, 4.10:1 ratio and was only available with solid lifter engines.

TI box on 68 mounted same as 69. Box does not have "pigtail" wiring harness

Mark, the fuel lines are 3/8" with no return line (that I can find).

so probably the tank is a replacement and the lines are original - as they are something of a bear to change. If so, then it's 400 HP or more. Given your recent post about the distributor #296 I suspect you are correct that it is either an L71 or an L89. They did make about 700 L89's in 1968 so it is certainly a possibility. There is no way to tell an L71 from an L89 car, the only difference is the heads and the block stamping.
                    Good luck,
