Re: Big block question
No, the 3844962 block was used only for 396 applications and was rather quickly superceeded by other cast numbers 'improved' for 427 configuration. When introduced in '65, there were several configurations of the 396 (passenger car, Corvette, truck, and marine) with varying torque/HP profiles. The '962 block continued in use into 1966 for other Chevy car lines (e.g. Chevelle) while the 427 debuted as the top of the line torque/HP engine using a 3869942 casting.- Top

the 962 block is the only 396 block
that can be safely bored to 4.250",std 427 bore size. chevy must have planned to do a 427 in 1965 but was told not to by GM higher ups. i bored several back in the late 60s. .060 is max over bore on all other 396 blocks. do not ask how i know this.- Top
