    c2 hood bubbles

I have an a/c l-79 convetible that has a 1980 lacquer paint job that is bubbling on the hood right over the a/c compressor. i stripped the hood and the bubbling is back. does anyone know how to treat the fiberglass to stop this problem?

I have a 71 that had a paint job in 1990. I purchased the car in 2001 and the hood had bubbles directly above the area of the a/c compressor. I repainted the hood in 2002 and now some small bubbles have reappeared in the same area. One opinion as to the problem was that the a/c compressor had flung oil on to the underside of the hood over the years and impregnated the fiberglass. To reduce further oil getting on the underside of the hood I have fabricated a stainless steeel cover which bolts to the drilled hole in the front of the compressor. Another body shop advised that further treatment and painting of the hood would require sanding and sealing of the affected areas proir to paint.

Until you get all of the oil out of the pores of the fiberglass you will never get the bubbles to quit appearing. You must also eliminate the problem of the A/C oil getting on the underside of the hood. The heat from the sun or the engine will continue to make the oil rise. I solved the same problem by stripping the hood to the bare glass, then putting a heat lamp over the problem spot causing the oil to come to the surface. When the oil would come to the surface, which is supprisingly quick, I would wipe it away with a rag saturated with grease and wax remover, laquer thinner will also work. After about an hour of heating and wiping away, the oil quit appearing. The hood was then repainted and a guard was installed on my compressor to keep the oil off of the underside of the hood.

Terry, I saw this on Ebay. It is a fabricated sheild for your AC compressor. Good Luck!
