Noticed white smoke increasing. Engine is a 1964 327/365 L-46. Did a compression test today. Around 200psi in all cyl. throttle held open, engine hot. Removed the carb and saw coating of oil in both sides of runners but nore noticable on drivers side. Has the original Holley with the metered orice PCV system. Vacuum reeds 15-16psi and steady at idle taken though back of intake manifold. Spark plugs are very evenly oil sooted. I believe this engine was rebuilt in the past, but no idea when. I replaced the intake manifold gaskets soon after purchase to replace original intake back on. The car runs great. Idles nice, has excellent power, but that smoke is getting alot of attention at the car shows. Could this be a failed intake manifold gasket affecting all 8 cyls? Valve seals? This huffs out smoke even when the throttle is gunned! thanks.

Re: burning oil through intake
Check in the archives, Sean. When the engine is machined during a rebuild, depending on what gets done, you can develop a mis-alignment between the block, heads, and intake that may cause this to happen. Seems to me Duke and Joe Lucia discussed this situation a couple of months ago. The quick check is to remove an intake bolt and see if it is binding against the top of the bolt hole in the intake (should be centered).

Re: burning oil through intake
Sean:
Does the smoke happen mostly on startup, and then slowly lessen as the oil burns off? That would indicate leaky valve seals/guides.
Are the plugs wet, or black, sooty, and dry?
On another note, if your L76 pulls 15 in-hg @ idle, then it means that the original camshaft is no longer in place. The L76 was built with the "30-30" solid lifter cam, which should only pull about 10 in-hg @ idle.

Re: burning oil through intake
Thanks for your responses. I'm certain that it is oil burning. Constant white smoke at all rpm speeds. Oil noted under the carb would lead me to believe that either the intake gaskets have failed or oil is pulled in through pcv line. The valve stem seals rank no. 3 on this list. I can't think of any other way to have engine oil show up there. I did check the bolt hole alignment and found no abnormality. Thanks. Sean Blake 39778- Top
