    58 Radio Capacitors

Can anyone tell me a supplier for the radio capacitors or the ohm rating for each?

    Thanks,

    Randy

    Hi Randy

The capacitors your talking about are the ones on the voltage regulator, generator, coil, and battery gauge. Correct? I bought mine from MaryJo Rohner. At the time, she did not have the one for behind the battery gauge.
    Give her a call.

      Randy,
Caps are rated Mfd. not ohms, and there are too many to list. Get yourself a copy of the GM radio service manual for your year if you are truly serious about rebuilding your set. All of the internal caps shoud be replaced, if it has the original caps in it. modern caps are a fraction of the size of the originals, and are way better quality. The external triple cap on the case almost never goes bad. The only one that I have ever replaced was one that was damaged by too long a bolt being used in the cowl vent lever, and it cut into the cap. Original Delco Caps are pretty near impossible to find, and you can just leave the old case in place and replace with modern eletrolytics inside the case.
The electronics are pretty straight forward on these sets, but it is the wonderbar section that gives most people problems. It is not a hard section once you fully understand the operation, but the learning curve is pretty steep! Unless you are planning on doing these sets on a regular basis, you would probably be better off sending them out to someone who is experienced in them. You can invest several hundred dollars in a cap tester, signal generator, and other test equipment to allow you to properly repair these radios, and it is just not worthwhile for one set only. If you don't work on the wonderbar section fairly regularly, your skills will get rusty.

        Randy,
If you are talking about the noise suppression caps that are mounted in the engine compartment, then try Jack Humphrey. He scrounges these caps from junkyards on a regular basis, and he restores and tests all his caps. The correct Delco # on these caps is absoultely necessary for judging.

John, thanks for the input. I am looking for the radio suppression caps. Can you tell me how to get in touch with Jack Humphrey?

God, I wish we could edit a post here for 30 minutes. Anyway, the board software stripped off "send e-mail" from my post above due to its being enclosed in carets. Use the "send e-mail" (in carets) next to his name either on one of his posts or in his profile to e-mail him.
