When I'm driving at 55 MPH the engine is reving around 4000 RPM. ( If the tach is accurate). How can I find out what my rear axle ration is? Is it easily changed to a higher ratio so the engine will rev less at road speed? Will any older Chevy gears fit?

Re: 1962 Rear Axle Ratio & Replacement
Ken, I doubt seriously that your tach is anywhere near close to accurate - if it was, you would have to have about a 6.0:1 rear axle - with the standard 3.70:1 axle, SECOND gear in a close-ratio 4-speed would give you 54 mph at 4000 rpm! Easiest way to determine your axle ratio is to jack up the rear (use jackstands on each side), mark the prop shaft and a rear tire with pieces of masking tape, turn the rear tire one complete revolution, and count the number of turns that gives at the prop shaft - that will give you your ratio (3-1/2 is 3.55, 3-3/4 is 3.70, 4-1/8 is 4.11, etc.). Good luck.
