    '55 Carb Airport Incident

Upon arriving at the local airport on our way to Carlisle, my fellow traveler,"Bill", had a correct '55 carb in his carry on to be delivered to the rebuilder at Carlisle. Upon inspection by the on-duty TSA officer, he asked if the carb had gas in it. The carb hadn't seen gas in forty years and it passed the sniff test,so,it was passed and off we went to the gate with the carb. About a half hour later, along came the airline manager to confiscate the carb. Evidently there was a misunderstanding between the TSA and the airline folks- it was a "carburetor" and that was that, gas or no gas, it couldn't go. Our wives had to come to the terminal and pick up the carb.

This should be a lesson to all of us swap meet shoppers: If you fly, never buy anything you can't take home on the plane. Examples are: anything to do with gas: carbs, lines, filters, pumps (brand new or used), also aerosols like tire shine, degreaser, paint, etc. If you do, be prepared to mail those items home.

You can add stainless/chrome trim. I was flying home to San Francisco from the Puyallup Swap meet near Seattle. The TSA's would not let me carry aboard the lower outer trim pieces and door sill trim for my 59 Corvette. And I only had soft luggage, so I was not going to try to put them in my luggage.

Could of talked to the PIC (pilot in command) of the flight, he might of been a Corvette owner and understood your mission to Carlisle.

Joe, so how did you get the trim pieces home?

Jim, I am a commercial airline pilot and that decision doesn't even get close to the pilot. If TSA says it ain't going, there isn't any way to bypass them and have the pilot say it is ok. While in uniform, properly badged, with the crew in tow, I was refused entry beyond the x-ray machines for having a 4" crescent wrench. No amount of discussion would change the mind (I use the term loosely) of the young person there.

TSA has the first and only say-so in what does and does not go past security.
