I am reassembling the front end of my '61 and am having trouble installing the lower spindle support bushings. Has anyone a hint as to how to keep the bushing aligned with the spindle bore so it doesn't "cross thread" as it is installed? It seems it will take some serious torque to install this bushing but the problem is starting it out properly. According to all the books I have it states "screw out the old bushing and install a new one to a torque of 175 ft/lbs."! How do I get it started straight? Any hints would be welcome. Thanks.

Re: C1 Spindle Support
Larry, if you are having a trouble installing the lower bushing in the spindle then something must be terribly wrong as the spindle is threaded as is the bushing and the bushing should screw in almost by finger until the last turn. Please respond if I am misunderstanding your problem.- Top

Re: C1 Spindle Support
The spindle support has full threads but the bushing has just a hint of threads. These are the same type of bushings that are in the lower-inner and upper-inner A-Frames.
I can just start the bushing into the support about a half a turn by hand and when I use a wrench to continue inserting, it cocks off on an angle. Maybe I can start the old one in from the other side of the bore and use the shaft to keep it aligned. Seems almost like it forms a thread on the bushing as it is inserted. Thanks John for any help or hints.- Top

Re: C1 Spindle Support
Larry, the only thing I can think of is that mabey you got a mis-formed bushing because on mine they just threaded in with no problem. The outer bushings require quite a bit of force to thread into the A arms but I can not think why you would be having that problem at the spindle. One other thing to consider is re-using the old bushing with the new shaft since you said that it threaded in OK. The bushings on a C1 as you are aware are all steel threaded into steel and if properly lubed will last almost forever.- Top
