Looking for some help or tricks to getting that pesky old gasket out. It almost has me convinced they have been reusing the old gasket cause it is really stuck up in that groove. 64 c2

THere should be 2 7/16 bolts attaching the inner ring to the block inside the oil filter where it screws into the block. Remove those bolts and the aluminum ring and the gasket will be exposed.- Top

Oil filter canister gasket; try a dental pick
Steve,
Some advice that I was given is to ask your dental hygenist if he or she has an old dental pick that is too worn for them to use. Mine hygenist had one tucked away in a drawer and she was more than happy to donate it to my Corvette tool collection. Supposedly, these picks are great for removing that stubborn gasket. I haven't needed to use it yet, but I think it will work.

Re: oil filter cannister
Using a dental pick works fine, but, if the gasket has been used over and over, it most likely will be petrified up in the groove. The only way to get it out then is to remove the adapter as specified in this thread. Do any removal work carefully since you don't want to damage the aluminum adapter surface.- Top

Re: oil filter cannister
Thanks for the help. The dental pick sounds like a great little tool for this But I think this one will force me to remove the inner ring to get it out.- Top

When I worked in a service station in the 60's this was a common way to get the gasket out... remove the adapter. I still do it today unless the gasket falls out on its own.- Top

Re: oil filter cannister
I've been told that often times the gasget that is so hard to get out is one that was, at one time, not removed when the new one was installed. Over and over again, it was left underneath the new one to the point of becoming so hard to remove.- Top

Re: oil filter cannister
Oh Boy does that remind me of my early days as a budding mechanic. I worked part time at a Chevy dealership while going to collage. I worked the lube rack and did the tires. The Vega was only out for a year so it musta been 1971. Local lawyer had a 1963 coupe that was his everyday transportation. I didn't even think about that gasket cause the new one fit up in that groove so nice. When I fired it up I was checking the guages as the line mechanic started yelling at me. I openned the door to see a flood of oil flowing across the freshly painted floor of the garage. What a mess. The guys I worked with had fun teasing me about that till the new kid dropped a Vega off the lift.
As an update I did get the gasket out but had to drop the plate to do it. I've been lucky and not had to deal with this type of filter to often but when I have I always had a tough time with that gasket. I never thought about dropping that plate before. Made life a lot easier. Thanks- Top
