Could someone tell me if there was any overspray of body paint found on the spare tire tube or tray when these cars were painted at the ST Louis plant? Thanks

Re: Mid Year Overspray
Pete, As a general statement, no, but many cars went back for touch-up work due to damage on the assembly line. The body was originally painted prior to body drop on the frame, so if a car never had any factory touch-up repairs, body overspray on chassis components would not be present. Does any thing in the rear area of the car look "spotted in"?- Top

Add on....
QA/QC was known to reject cars for poor paint coverage putting them into the repair booths Gene mentions. The rear valence panel was well known for 'sparce' coverage as painter had to bend to spritz there....
Original cars had valence panel 'tacked' on/up during paint booth journey (covered in Dave Burrough's restoration book on his first 396 job) as there were no bumpers on the car. I also suspect the tire tub was NOT yet installed during the trek down paint booth alley.
Together, this suggest the only way you could have body color on the tire tub is:
(1) Car was 'flagged' and ran through spot repair booth at
St. Louis final line. (2) Customer complained and dealer 'fixed' on deliver and/or
during warranty. (3) Car got 'wacked' in it's life and was touched up.
Bottom line, proof of factory original condition (paint overspray) being attributed to item one and NOT two/three is owner's burden during concours judging, unfortunately....- Top
