I am using a replacement frame for my 65 convertible. The body has been mounted on the frame with no problems. I installed a rebuilt steering gearbox and new rag joint. When reinstalling the steering column, I was shocked to see that the steering shaft is misaligned by about 1/2" with the splined hole in the rag joint. Can the steering box be shimmed outward to correct this? Any other suggestions?

Re: Steering Shaft Misalignment
Ben-----
It could be shimmed, but said procedure was never used or necessary in PRODUCTION and I've never seen it required in SERVICE. As Mike mentioned, I think that I would suspect some problem with the frame. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Steering Shaft Misalignment
Ben,
When disassembled my '67 I found one "U" shaped, thick shim between the steering gear box and the frame, held in place by one of the bolts. I replaced it when assembling the car. Could yours have had a shim that you haven't replaced?- Top

Re: Steering Shaft Misalignment
The only way that I could align the shaft with the rag joint was to loosen the steering box and shift it inward. I will shim it in this position just long enough to get the car to a shop that can evaluate the problem. Thanks for the input. Ben- Top
