Need help identifying gas tank for 68 corvette>

Hi, I adopted a gas tank from a 68 corvette. Something does not seem right about it. It has the AOL insignia on it, bottom side. It has a side gas return hose on the top right side and the gas supply line on the bottom right side. It has a filler neck that seems ok, has a funny spring loaded gas cap on it? I have never seen one like that. It has a round disk shaped thing between the filler neck and the top return line on the right side and it looks like a wire is attached or was attached there. Is this a later model tank that was stuck in a 68? I don't recall that wire being attached to the top of the tank being correct for 68. What is it?

    Thank in advance, Terry

1968 and early 1969 tanks are similar. The Rochester carb cars have a fuel return on the top right side. In addition, all the tanks have the 3/8" supply on the bottom. If you noticed a round approx 5/8" disc like thing soldered to the top of the tank at a high point in the tank (frequently looks like a disc of metal with a little groove down the center that a small wire could fit through) that is likely a vent which was added later in the 1969 model year. In addition, those later tanks have larger clearance areas bent into the sides of the tank at the bottom that are more rectangular - the 1968 and early 69 are almost semicircular and smaller.

    Hope this helps,
    Mark

That disk on the top right side of the tank is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter and has 5 screws holding it down. It has a small stud sticking out of the center that has two nuts on it.

It has the semi-circular cut outs on the side, not the rectangular shaped type of replacement and later years you talked about.

      Any more ideas? Terry
