any tricks to replacing a fuel pump

Hello all - I've found a correct fuel pump for my big block. Is installation as easy as I think? I've got a new gasket, disconnected the battery, fire extinquisher at hte ready, gold tee for clamp, etc. Are there any tricks or words of wisdom?

    thanks,

turn the engine over till the pump push rod is all the way up into the block. to make it stay there take it all the way out and coat it with grease and put it back in

I just did mine yesterday on my 67. As suggested, remove the pump push rod and coat with grease and reinstall. The grease will hold the rod up while you install the pump. To remove the rod remove the pipe plug below the pump.

You should use a fitting wrench to get the fitting off/on. Also have a bolt ready to plug the rubber hose while you are changing things. The gas will run out otherwise......

If your rubber hose is old inspect for cracks.

      Good Luck

Look at the front of the engine block at the fuel pump. There should be a bulge in the casting that follows the rods passage about midway there is a bolt that is in line with this passage remove it. Now with it out you will see that it is rather short find a bolt that is long enough to contact the fuel pump shaft install the bolt just enough to hold the shaft. Then remove the fuel pump install the new pump remove the bolt install the old bolt with sealer to prevent leakage. This should make your job much easier. Paul

          Paul,

I used this very procedure recently to replace the fuel pump on my '66 small block and it worked very well. I wasn't aware it worked on a big block.

            Rob and Paul-----

It doesn't work for a big block. There is no similar bolt situation on a big block.
