    C2:67 Heat Riser Update

I was surprised what a soak in lacquer thinner and some beadblasting would do for a 67 heat riser:

Here's what it looked like before:

But it's still missing the anti-rattle spring which I'll take off the new one when I replace it with the old.

And here's the numbers on the counterweight:

B 7 with 6844 under. I believe that this is the original heater riser to my 67 327/300HP. Can anyone confirm the numbers?

Nice job. The only down side to reinstalling this on your car is that the springs that cause the counter weight to open the baffle weaken with age. So you have a great looking heat riser that may stick closed. I would test that with some localized heat before installation.

Gotta Wait til the Wife's Away

to test it in the oven. Doubt that I'll get rid of that Tri-flo smell. I suppose winding the spring around one more time would be too much.

          Jerry,

------You can see that the post is bent already. Do not wind the spring around again as it will put more pressure on it. My experience is that once the post degrades to about the point yours is due to many, many hot/cold cycles it is not long for the world. I have never tried to replace a post, so have no idea if it can be done or not. It was never that important to me to save the original heat riser, but I understand your compulsion to do so. Just be very careful of that post. IMO straightening the post would degade its condition further.........Bill S

I think the post is purposely bent.

            Bill,

On a closer look at that post on the heat riser, I think it is purposely bent inward to catch the stop on the counterbalance, and to hold the baffle slightly open to the direction the baffle is going. If the post were straight out, it would miss the stop and the counterbalance weight would be rotated to a more then closed position.

I realize that the post looks pretty weak and after 38 years of hot and cold pounding, it probably is on it's last leg. So if it breaks off, I guess I'll put the new one back on.

The reason I replaced this one with the new exhaust system was that I thought it was supposed to go full open with heat on the spring alone, and that it wasn't working properly. As I found out from some recent posts, the spring is only supposed to open it partially, and exhaust pressure does the rest. It was working properly with the old system, and the new heat riser is much larger in the body and counterweight.

I'll test it in the wife's oven or with a propane torch before I put it on.
BTW Bill, I still have your buckles on my belts, and I think I'm going to go for Chapter flight later this month.
