Early 68 owners gas tank question....

Are there some early 68 owners out there that have had their original gas tanks out. Did any of you find a wire attached to a post located between the filler neck and the return line on the top right side of the tank.

I have what I think is an early 68 tank out of a 390hp car. It has a round disk attached between the filler neck and the return line. The disk is about 2 inches in diameter. I removed it and it is part of a float machanism that seems to activate when the gas tank is about 3/4 empty. It all looks very factory. Tank looks original for 68 (not a replacement). It has the gage float on the bottom side as usual. Any ideas appreciated.

Yes my tank is out and under the car. I will look tonight and if it is anything strange or like you describe I will take a photo for you.

I believe I found my answer written and barely able to read on the side of the float mechanism. It says "travel accessories, March 2 1973." The big mistery is over. Thanks, Terry

I think the mistery is over for me. I took the thing out and looked for some sort of markings or logo. On the side of the mechanism that sits inside the tank it reads..."Travel Accessories, March 2 1973." Weird....someone installed a low fuel indicator. It also say 240 ohm on it. It is a nice pristine tank other than that little hole that I wish was not there. But, I believe it is original 68. If you get rid of your tank, let me know, I am looking for a good used one.

Hey, I thought of something else. Let me know what you find on your car for padding on the tank supports (bottom side) and the tank straps that run over the top of the tank. This tank has that heavy asfault type paper under the straps and the remnants of a thin rubber pad under the supports. Appreciate your responce.

        Thanks, Terry

            Terry,

Mine had the tar paper strips under the straps and a wider piece up on the top where it touched. The tar paper is about the thickness of roofing paper. I replaced the tar paper strips, but since I have not re-installed it have not deceided or determined if the other pieces are needed. How earlier is your 68? Mine is Dec. 22, 1967. Someone Xmas present.

I was hoping the same thing. I could not recall the details about the low fuel warning on the 68. I acquired this tank hoping to put it into my May built 68 that has a replacement tank in it. The tank is extremely nice except for that nice hole in the top and the screw holes around the edges. I was hoping I stumbled across something. Still it makes be wonder. Who ever installed it did a nice job. It did not look like it was leaking. Has a faint thin cork gasket and 5 screws that hold it in place. I am not sure what happen to my original tank. It is gone So, I have been sort of looking for a good replacement one. Thank, Terry

Re: Early 68 owners gas tank question....

My car is May 68. I acquired the tank out of a car in California that I believed was early built. I will find out the build date. I was going to use it in my car and then I saw that thing on the top side. Sort of made me wonder what was going on. Looked nicely done and did not appear to leak. But, I talked to others about it. If original, I think there would have been nut plates under the screws instead of just plain sheet metal screws.

Dennis, let me get this straight. None of your padding was thin black foam rubber. You definately had that asfault paper type stuff under the tank straps and under the tank supports (crossmember thing that bolts up under the gas tank).

                Thanks, Terry

...I think the only low fuel warning on '68 Corvettes was that if you DID NOT fuel up at 1/4 of a tank, you ran OUT of fuel.

You are asking me for my recollections???
As best I remember it was only the lens that said "low fuel" and it was only early cars. I can look for Kevin Cavanaugh's interior survey results after Cincinnati to confirm my memory. None of the ones reported had a light nor any wires to it, but how many had that lens, and what percentage of those were reported???
