According to the Corvette Black Book, only 80 cars (out of 49,213) were built in 1977 with either non-standard paint or primer only. The 77 I recently purchased is one of the primer only ones: Option Code 7D001XA "SPECIAL PAINT - BODY IN PRIME." Is there any source to tell me exactly how many of the 80 were made with this code (left the factory in primer)?

Re: 1977 factory Special Paint code
I believe that all the info concerning these cars is published in the NCRS Specification Guide. There is no breakdown as to what the special paint codes were, i.e. primer, special colorDick Whittington- Top

Re: 1977 factory Special Paint code
You might want to send an email to Mike Antonick, the author of the book. My 65 coupe has a blank paint code, which can mean a primer car. He was kind enough to respond to a question that I had concerning the info, or lack thereof, on my trim tag. He will, however, probably advise that there is no definitive published data available.

John:
That's a nice piece of history there. I'm curious how you learned the option code.
The 68-82 spec guide does not offer much more than the Black Book. And I believe you'll find the data missing. I've done quite a bit of research on the late model C3s...not exhaustive but enough to understand the factory process and cross tabulation of RPO data was not an essential task. Nobody wanted it...and nobody cared so why do it!
I would suggest you order the 77 restoration kit from GM at 1-800-222-1020. Have your VIN ready...you may get lucky.Tom Russo
