    62 door latch

Any advice on how to adjust or otherwise fix door latch. It appears to be "hitting a hard jam" instead of closing and latching with a gently push. When slamed it will latch. Obviously I am not a mechanical person. (Mike Ernst: good to finally meet you at Carlisle, I bought your 340 62 at Bloomington from Ron N. of Wisconsin)

Things which come to my mind are: check if the catch on the door jamb is not loose or wrongly positioned. check if the door weatherstrip is not attached as intended.

How are the hinge pins? Is your door sagging?

I had to eliminate the "cheese grater" like shims behind the pillar side latch before the doors on my 60 would close and latch properly. I Don't have any problem with the latch mechanisms moving out of adjustment without them. But then I don't slam my doors!

If the door gaps are correct, The striker shims move the latch out towards the door. Removing them will provide more clearance, however if there is no bubbing, the weatherstrip may require a little lub. to solve the problem.

Put some modeling clay on the top and face of the door latch and carefully close the door until the clay hits. You can look at impressions in the clay to see where the door striker hits the latch on the door frame. The door frame latch can be shimmed to fit closer to the door or moved up or down, in or out by loosening the four latch screws. The door can be moved forward if there is room at the front of the door. There is a drawing in the ST-12 service manual that shows the proper clearance. Or if you really aren't mechanical, a good body shop should be able to make the adjustments.
