Seems to me folks should just copy the VIN numbers of these auctions into discussion boards such as this, so that anyone doing due diligence in the future will come across their prospective VIN and pass on the forgery......

Exactly. And that is the reason I started keeping a record of VINs for various years is so that when I am looking for one in the future, I'll know that the car matches what it was a few years ago.
Of course, what we really need is a record from 30 years ago, but obvioulsy, we can't.
