I know I have seen this addressed here before but... What is the best carpet for a 66 coupe? I have seen set for $175 and for $225. Are they made by the same manufacture and the vendor raises the prices? Who do you all suggest? Thank you Bill#44207

Re: C2 Best carpet replacement
I just inquired about this myself, here is a copy of a response I received from Wilcox Corvette supply, hopefully it is accurate and informative:
"The carpet sets are made by ACC which is the only company that sells a true 80/20 carpet. If you purchase carpet for your car and you want the correct color, ACC is the only place that makes it.
There are only two or three vendors that don't carry the ACC carpets and they purchase it from a different company. This other company does not offer a true 80/20 carpet set. It's looped, the colors are not correct and it's not rayon/nylon carpet. Weather you purchase from us or someone else, make sure the carpet set is ACC. The colors are correct."- Top

Bill, Scott et al., ACC vs. Al Knoch C2 carpet
Guys,
There was a thread back on Sept 14 and 15 about C2 carpet. Several people stated that the ACC C2 carpet was no longer up to par, at least regarding fit and thickness of the jute backing. People recommeded Al Knoch. Will the Al Knoch carpet not pass judging muster? Is the Al Knoch carpet not the correct 80/20?

Re: C2 Best carpet replacement
I ask each of the possible vendors for a swatch of their product.
I compared the swatches to my original carpet for color, loop, directional pattern, density, texture, thickness, backing, threads and binding.
The best choice wasn't perfect, but was quite obvious.

Re: C2 Best carpet replacement
I purchased ACC carpet thru Long Island. It was a real bear to install. The polypropylene backing is very stiff resulting in a "tough go" to make it conform to the rear fender tubs and the differential "lump".
I really am not happy with the final outcome.....
The front seat foot areas went better. You need to trim carefully, especially around the console area.
I also installed new underlayment like original which contributed to the wheel tub problems.
I'd like to see a recent Al Knoch installation to see if his stuff fits better.
As far as loop quality and color, I can't comment. Mine is black. The stuff I took out was 20 yeras old and it was faded to brown.......- Top

Re: C2 Best carpet replacement
-------Couple of things!!!
------- All 4 major moulded carpet manufacturers that I know of have the so called 80/20 carpet. As a fairly funny aside; one of them will do no Corvette products as they consider us all far to anal. They actually make a very good product, probably the best that I am aware of!!!
-------None of those manufacturers actually have a plastic-backed carpet manufacturing plant. All they do is mold it and sell it! They are at the whim and the capability of the weaving plant they deal with for quality and color of the carpet itself.
-------If any of the current moulders were willing to pay a bit more they would get a much better quality product. They are all under the delusion that we want the cheapest product they can manufacture. Although none of us Corvetters wants to pay more than necessary, I am posative that we all would pay the needed difference for a quality set of carpet. Im fairly sure that the end product would only add $50/75 to the cost of a set of carpet. In this day of $100,000 restorations (sic) I just dont see the extra cost as a problem. Part of the problem is that a couple these manufacturers make literally thosands of different styles and thier customers are predominatly used car fluffers that are very price contious.
-------The weaving plants also dye thier product. It is safe to say that the reason the carpets of today (particularly black) fade so quickly is a combination of cheapness on thier part as well as problems with the regulatory group that decides what they can put in the dye they use because of some percieved health issue. I dont think any regulatory agency could find a person that ever got sick because of the carpet in thier 53/05 Corvette. I suspect that the agency involved tries to find things to regulate to justify thier jobs and existence............Bill S- Top

Re: C2 Best carpet replacement
Bill,
-------1st. Thanks for that last E-mail. I have wanted to think about that and then hopefully give you a good reply.
-------2nd. Please, look into Mid-Americas carpets. I was at Werner Meiers shop (I would guess one of the best guys and shops around) and he had a 67 Vette there with very, very nice carpeting. When I questioned him about it he said that Mike Yeager now had an inside house program to mold carpet and wanted to be the best source out there. These were 67 saddle carpets so usually less than optimum on color from most of the guys moulding carpet, yet were very close to dead-nuts in color and seemed to fit in all the places that ACC just cant seem to do anymore. Prior to seeing these I would have said to buy Als stuff. I havent led you wrong yet have I???..........Bill S- Top
