    Mike Goen's '60

mike goen's ' mark lovejoy mike if you can find a vintage block it will increase the value of the finished car as for the bodywork do as much as you can yourself like stripping the paint its messy and labor intensive but you will save a lot of money and if there are any surprises under there a least you will know about it when hiring a body shop to do the finish work good luck and don't be shy about asking for help best regards mark lovejoy ncrs ' d

re mike goen's ' mike goen thanks mike i've been told by a professional restorer in tuscon that i will want to use aircraft stripper that i should be able to buy at any napa but he also seemed concerned about me doing it myself lacking experience because its easy to get into the gelcoat and then you've got a real mess on your hands the same guy offered to strip the car to bare fiberglass correct the radiused wheel wells and give it a show quality paint job for to so would you say he is exagerating the risk to get my money or is what he told me accurate and his price fair mike

re mike goen's ' mark lovejoy mike to my knowledge your ' never had gelcoat a least my ' did'nt i thought the gelcoat process started in the late 's i used a product called bix available at my local home depot for about a gallon yes it was messy but the stuff rinses with water be careful take your time i used many small brass brushes look like tooth brushes won't scratch the surface for the nooks and crannies then you will know exactly what's under the paint and what is'nt good luck advice is always free its the work part that costs best regards mark lovejoy a k a vetmstr aol com ncrs ' d

re mike goen's ' mike goen hmmm thanks mike to tell you the truth i'm not even sure what the gelcoat process is so i'm sure you're right as i said this is my first restoration and i'm unexposed to the body part of it i had just about made up my mind to have the arizona pro do the whole body deal for me maybe i'll reconsider that after all one of my goals in this project is to learn from it using the bix stuff will the old primer i need to remove just sort of wipe off or does it still require a lot of sanding and such how lond did it take you to strip your car thanks again mike

re mike goen's ' mark lovejoy mike the bix product will remove everything down to the bare fiberglass which is what we are looking for here the majority of the paint will come off with a putty knife i used plastic body filler spreaders because i was concerned with scratching the surface apply the solvent liberally with the spray gun that is included with the stuff wait minutes or so and it will pucker and practically fall off you will have to repeat the process for every coat of paint on the car when i got down to the primer i wet sanded with grit you can leave small amounts of primer on the surface if you want the nice thing about working on fiberglass is you don't have to worry about the surface rusting hence you don't need to do a small section prime section prime leave the car in bare fiberglass then have your bodyman look it over good luck mark lovejoy ncrs ' d

re mike goen's ' mike goen thanks jack that's the sort of things i hoped to learn when i recently joined the ncrs and started participating in this discussion board it hasn't always been easy to get direct answers to the few questions i've asked for example i'm still not absolutely sure what wheel well radiusing is and what it takes to correct it that's what this guy az professional told me had been done to my car but i can't see that it's been modified if anyone reading this can help me understand you can see pictures of the car starting at http www zianet com megoen m m restoration html also i had no idea that i could over restore the car for showing i did suspect that the price was suspicious i appreciate the confirmation i'm not sure yet how far i want to go with the restoration driver or show but for the moment i am proceding toward the max i have been encouraged by another thread on this board which led me to believe i can still accomplish a lot with it even though it doesn't have the original engine thanks again mike

re mike goen's ' jack humphrey beware the use of the term show quality paint job there's a wide latitude of interpretation here is it lacquer or enamel enamel will result in a full deduction on the ncrs judging field if that's an objective if the lacquer is obviously clear coated that's another deduction if the body prep and paint work are too perfect you could loose points for over restoration is the application of the paint done to known factory original proceedures overspray orange peel etc so ask yourself first what you want if you want a pretty driver this is a great deal if you want an exterior you can show and score high on in corvette concourse judging circuits ncrs bloomington chevy vettefest this is an unbelieveably cheap price bodymen with skill and proven experience in the field charge k for such services

re mike goen's ' jack humphrey i encourage you to build on your ncrs experience by joining your local chapter and getting active mike you'll find there are old pro's who'll literally bend over backwards to help you and there's only so much you can get from i net e mail posts some things take time and interaction to come to grips with i appreciate your thanks that's what we're here for helping other is the hobby sport of corvette restoration preservation the wheel well issue is one we see over and again original early corvettes through mid year were designed for std passenger car tires lots of guys who owned these cars wanted to modify them for hp street track use and put on wider tires tyres as they say in england to do this and maintain safety not rub against body surfaces the wheel well was frequently widened or flared to give the larger tires more working room at ncrs our flight judging standards focus on concours factory originality and that oftentimes means undoing the modifications of prior owners but nothing says you have to do this heck the car's your asset and you should do with it as you please to maximize your enjoyment you just need to have make informed decisions as to which doors you close when you take a particular decision in repair maintenance for many corvette owners the loss of a few originality points here there on the judging field is no big deal to others it is a big deal so beauty is in the eye of the beholder and you're the beholder of your car ncrs will help you gain an appreciation of the spectrum of your alternatives just keep in mind there is no right or wrong there is a line of thought on factory original vs modified
