'72: How to remove paint from rear deck vents?

Are there any hints or ideas on how to successfully remove paint from the vents on the rear deck? I will be changing color, so I need to get the old paint off, yet it's tough to reach down in there.

    Thanks, Patricia

    Patricia:

If you are talking about the cast metal grilles, remove them and media blast them, this will give the surface an etching for the primer to stick to before final top coat.

If you don't have access to a media blaster then the usual paint stripper will work nicely. The two forms of stripper are the liquid spray on such as Capn Lee's spray on and the more common gel. Both work well.

I'm referring to the hole you see after you remove the pretty little grilles. I can spray the Captain Lee's down there, but I can't reach to scrape or rub the paint off. I guess I just do my best...

Maybe the easiest thing to do is black this area out after the body is painted.

-----Yup, Dickies right. If your car was already painted once chances are that the owner at that time didnt black out that area as part of the reassembly. It should be semi-gloss blacked out underneath the lip.........Bill S

Oh, very interesting! I don't know the history on this car, but I guess now I know it's been repainted, because it has blue paint down in the vent holes. I'm very glad to know this is supposed to be semi-gloss black!

So can I get by with just Rustoleum black down there? Will it be noticeable once the grilles are back in place, or should I leave it for the paint job and let the professional spray real black paint down there?

                  Thanks for the info!

                    Patricia,

------The reason for the semi-flat black is to not see it. I believe your eye should be drawn away from the hole........Bill S

                      Patricia,

I wouldn't use Rustoleum for that. Try Krylon.

Thanks, Wayne. That's good to know!

                        Krylon it is.
