    Use of POR-15

I am in the process of rust removal from the frame of my 73. The rust is just surface. I also intend to detail the engine. POR-15 sells kits i.e. engine painting and and starter kits for frame with semi-gloss black. I would appreciate your judgement on the use of these products from POR-15. Thanks tom

Tom, I've used POR-15 products for years and I think they are excellent. I have never done a frame, just small parts and sheet metal.

      Re: Use of POR-15

      Tom,

I recently refinsihed my frame and for the first time I used POR-15. It seems to be a decent product for small stuff but contrary to what I've read it does show brush marks on larger objects. I didn't use it on my frame and I'm glad for that reason. I don't recommend using it on anything large that you want to have a nice smooth finish. I did however use it on several small parts and for the crossmember that holds the differential.

I used the metal cleaner and prep that POR-15 sells for my frame before I painted it and it turned out very nice. Just make sure you follow the directions and rinse it VERY WELL. I painted the frame using Rustoleum Satin black. I was told it looks as close to the original frame color as anything out there. I have to admit that it does look nice.

Good luck and remember to follow and adhere to all of the directions provided by POR-15. Don't take short cuts unless you want substandard results.

      Eric

        I don't like POR-15 either.

I prefer Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator as the color is better, and it's a much better product. You can use it on the frame, ot topcoat with the Rustoleum, or some even have used SEM Trim Black.

This 55 engine is painted with

POR-15 Chevy red engine paint, which I applied by hand with the engine installed. You'd be hard put to find a brush mark even on the stamped steel parts. Only problem I ever had was when I blew a hose clamp, the hot coolant discolored some of the paint. It was easily recoated, matched perfectly.

            Re: Use of POR-15

I used POR 15 on my vintage road race car and was less than impressed. It may stick very well to crappy rusted metal however it does NOT stick to new/sand blasted/properly metal prepped sheetmetal and tubing. Given the care restored
Corvettes recieve after restoration, I see not need for this product.

I was interested in the durability from rocks and abuse from wheel to wheel racing. For that the product has done OK!. It does not stick well to new metal that is prepared per their recommendations.

For a frame it is STILL hard to beat black Ditzler DP 90 epoxy primer. It has a very good look and is VERY tough. No UV protection however last time I looked if you need UV protection for your frame the wrong side of the car is showing!

              Re: Use of POR-15

I love POR-15, and in my experience it sticks GREAT when the surface is properly prepared. This includes new bare metal. The key is proper prep. POR-15 is excellent for small parts and provides a super hard and durable finish that remains flexible enough to stay put even with slight bending of the part.

Re: Use of POR-15 on the inside of Frames? How?

This current discussion is in regards to application to the outer frame.

How about the inside of the frame and Birdcage? As rust starts from the inside out. Can POR-15 be sprayed on using some sort of Pressure sprayer with a flexible extention wand with a radial spray head that will fit through existing access holes in the frame and bird cage to stop rust from within. Has anyone undergone this process?

If so, where would I be able to find an extention wand long enough to get at all interior surfaces of the frame?

Especially if you are conducting a Frame on Restoration this would be very valuable in preserving your car.

                Any thoughts?

                Nick

You could use a garden sprayer to get up into the dash. The problem is the sprayer will be junk as you will not be able to clean the sprayer. A touch spray gun will also do well in the dash.

Probably the best would be a plain old brush up in the bird cage.

                    nick,

yes i've tried that. used a under coat sprayer (eastwoods) with a long wand. had the frame on a rotater ,turned it over and over till the por-15 ran out the seams.painted outside ,then sprayed inside with eastwoods anti rust undercoating.
