I was walking through an old junk yard the other day and I came up on a 57' 4 door and I noticed the trunk was open with a long block assembly in it. It is the original block for 1960 Corvette #105879. The casting # is 519 and the engine suffix code is CT (245 H.P. dual four carb. manual trans.)

Re: 1960 VIN# 5879, I FOUND YOUR ORIGINAL BLOCK!!!
Glad to hear these junkyards still exist- In my area, there are very few junkyards that still have a '57 anything.. Let alone a Corvette block in the trunk of that same '57!

Re: Where is the junk yard?
-Actually, this junk yard story took place about 3 years ago. I put the block in storage and just remembered that I had it yesterday. The yard was near Greensboro, N.C. I know what I am about to say probably sounds too good to be true but believe me, its the truth!!!! My first experience was walking through this large concrete shop, probably around 3000 square feet and in to the fenced in "yard area" behind it which was about 1 1/2 acres. I have neverseen so many 57' 2dr. hardtop parts car in my life. Most still had the original 283 motors with either 2 or 4 barrel carbs. The cars themselves were pretty rusty. There were also quite a few 57', 56', and 55' convertibles but they too were too rusty to repaired but quite possibly could have been repaired with a lot of cash. I noticed a 58' Impala convertible there which I really liked but I believe that it sat on the bottom of the ocean for a while. There were also so late sixties Chevelles which I really don't care for but in there defense, they were 396 cars which still had big block engines with chrome valve covers on them. The owner was quite fond of 57's and 55's though. He said that if there was anything that I wanted, come get it quick because the property was foreclosed on and he had just a couple of weeks to move out. That is when I found the Corvette motor in the back of the old 57' 4dr. On the same trip, I bought 3 correct 2x4 carbs and enough parts except for the air horn to make a fourth. The block was given to me and I paid 500.00 for the carbs. I also told him that I would be back with tools to remove a set of single tower 2x4 power pack heads for a 57' which were still on the motor but ironically, by the time I got back, well they were gone!!! I wish that I would have had the money to buy him out but there wasn't any way possible at that time in my life to do so. The 2x4 carbs I sold for a decent little profit which I now regret and the motor is still sitting here waiting to be reunited with its body and chassis.- Top

Re: Where is the junk yard?
This sounds like a yard I visited in 1989. I recall lots of 55-57 Chevys but the really interesting find was a 63 Impala with a Chrysler 392 Hemi motor in it. This car was sitting on top of another car. A friend of mine bought a 69 vintage 396 engine for his 69 Nova project. This engine was an original 396 TWO BARREL CARB. Needless to say, that intake and carb setup was changed out quick.- Top
