    Alternator configuration

63 SB. (I've checked the archives) Chasing a charging circuit problem; 12.7 volts after starting - same as not running; no amps on engine analyzer when running. I bought a new alternator and regulator and will change them one at a time to see if either solves the problem (The alternator tested ok on O'Reilly's tester, but I thought I would check it anyway) The new alternator is in their book as a 63-68 replacement; output is shown as 61 amps. The unit looks identical to the Delco unit I have, except the orientation of the connections relative to the mounting holes is rotated 90 degrees. The parts man referred to this as being "clocked" and said it was related to the increased amperage rating. Is his explanation close to right?

I don't have any increased loads, so the 61 amp rating is not needed; but notes in the archives said that the increased amperage was not harmful either. Am I on the right track?

Of course all of this becomes moot if the regulator is the problem.

    Re: Alternator configuration

    Steve----

The "clocking" of the alternator has nothing to do with amperage rating; that is related to other features of the alternator, most notably rotor and stator. "Clocking" refers to the relative orientation of the drive end case to the split ring end case. There are 4 possible positions that can be achieved, each 90 degrees from the other. As a matter of fact, the "clocking" is one of the reasons for the plethora of original alternator part numbers. Many different part numbers were otherwise exactly the same EXCEPT for "clocking". Different "clocking" facilitates different chassis installations. For aftermarket SERVICE alternator purposes, only one "clocking" configuration may be used. Then, it's up to the installer to either find a way to make the wires fit, as-is, or "reclock" the alternator.

A higher amperage rating for a replacement alternator will cause absolutely no problem, whatsoever. I never recommend using an alternator with a LOWER than original rating, though.

      Steve,

Why don't you have alternator and regulator checked together at a good shop, this way you know exactly where the problem lies. Original parts for your car are the #512 regulator and #628 alternator and are unique to 63 chevrolet. You may want to think about sending these parts to John Pirkle for overhaul.

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. I think the young man told me more than he knew about alternators.

You're right, but I guess I'm lazy. I don't have an auto-electric shop nearby that I'm familiar with, and the parts house is close.

            Update

New alternator shows to be charging, so all is well. As was noted in the archives, the testers at the parts stores may not be accurate.
