    Starter Shield Question

    Gentlemen;
    Can anyone e-mail me a picture of what the correct starter shield looks like on a 68 small block L79?
    Someone looked at my 68 today and said I do not have the starter shield in place. I thought I did have it. I have a small "shield" over the wires on the solenoid and I thought this was the starter shield. Is there some other kind of shield that I am missing and which therefore could be contributing to my 'heat soak' problem? Looking only for factory original application, no aftermarket speedshop equipment.
    Any help is appreciated as I am now confused.
    As always, thank you in advance for any input

    Kurt I do not have the camera equipment, if you do post a picture of your shield and we can see it.

      I believe there is a drawing of the heat shield in the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM). That drawing may not be 100% exact, but it will be close enough to tell you if what you have is what should be there.

        Jim,
        I am so bad with computers that I would rather restore another Corvette than try and post a picture. Last night I tried to post a picture from phyotobucket.com for somebody else on the Corvette forum and screwed up my computer so bad that I had to have someone come to the house today and undo what I had done. I should not be allowed near a computer, for the computer's sake.

          Terry,
          I think I found that drawing and it shows a shield over the solenoid end that is not much more than an inch or two in size and protects the wires. The person I spoke with today seemed to think a starter heat shield covers the entire starter and I never saw naything like that other than the "blankets" the hot rod shops like Summit and Jegs sell. I don't believe that was ever stock on a 327. Now, big blocks, I know nothing about, maybe they had such a thing but I know nothing about big blocks.

            Kurt------

            There was NEVER a full starter heat shield originally used on any pre-1984 Corvette, small block, big block, or, if they had made any, medium block. The solenoid shield depicted in the AIM was the only shield used on small blocks during the 1964 to 1982 period. The configuration of that shield changed slightly for 1969 and later . Big blocks for 1968-74 used a differently configured shield, but it was still just a solenoid shield.

              Kurt,

              In addition, there are pictures of the shield in most parts catalogs as well. I just pulled up a couple of them online, and they are fairly obvious to see and therefore understand.

              Hope that helps,

                Thanks Joe. I thought maybe I missed something and had the wrong shield.
