    Serial number tag

This was mentioned before. I was on Ebay and saw someone selling a Serial number tag from their vette. I think it was from a 61 or 62. It was up to $365.00 when I looked. What I don't understand is first, you can't change those numbers. Also, the buyers vette has different numbers and there on the frame, engine, and I think tranny. So why would anyone spend all that money to buy this Tag? If the seller keeps his car registered, it can't be used. And if the buyer was able to use it, he would have to do some grinding and changing of his numbers.I'm just all confused as to why would someone buy it.

    Re: Serial number tag

    Lots of reasons.

The seller doesn't have the car anymore, so he doesn't care. "I TOOK OFF A TOTALLED CAR IN THE LATE 60'S."

Buyer has a car built from parts probably, and needs a number.

Buyer has a stolen car and needs a clean number.

Buyer has a car that lost its number (fell off, etc.) and doesn't have paperwork anyway.

Most states do not check the serial number or VIN plate against the frame and engine numbers UNLESS the car has a reason to pop a flag, like stolen. And realistically, how many old cars actually match the engine number? And how many can find or read a frame number? The way they used to find the frame numbers on Corvettes was to cut the door sill and the luggage area over the frame out to have a clear view. It takes a pretty radical reason to cut up somone's car. Do you think that will happen?

Buyer is probably going to a Alabama title or may live in a state that doesn't require titles on old cars. As such, he can go in with a bill of sale and probably won't get a second look.

He may be building a kit car with a '62 body and custom or late model frame and suspension. As such, there is no car for there to have been an original number on.
