    Jack Humprey Steering question

Jack, I read your post responce dated Thursday, sept 22. My tilt steering wheel doesn't go side to side, but when locked in place, one can move it up quite a bit (1"-1.5") But not down. I don't remember it doing this after I gutted the interior and re did it. I had the tilt wheel stripped down with the steering wheel, the in-out housing off and the locking telescope ring off. I had it disconnected from the rag joint and the bottom of the dash. It was laying on the bare floor while I did the interior and dash. I did this about seven years ago. I only noticed the bad up slop over the last two years. It steers great, and I was wondering if this is just a loose mounting somewhere in the housing as I have checked where it bolts up to the dash and its tight there. Any thoughts or areas to check would sure be appreciated.

Time to tear into the column again...this time delving deeper inside (or pull the column and have a pro who's been there/done that do the job for you). You'll find both the lower shaft housing and the upper shaft housing are retained by mounting screws. If they've loosened up due to stress and vibration, you can get omnibus 'wobble'... Consider pulling them and re-installing with strategic daubs of low grade Loctite.

Thanks Jack, I'll tear in to it again this winter.
