Re: 68 ignition cylinder removal
Simple procedure, did the ignition key still match the door?
If so, this is what I would do.
1. - 1968 do not have a steering interlock, so you can hotwire the car and drive it to the local locksmith. He can get the key code from the door look, make a new key, and you drive home with your THREE new keys, one for your key chain, one for the key closet at home, and one for the safe deposit box in the bank.
2. - If you are mechanically inclined, remove the door lock and take it to the locksmith to have a key made. Then take your THREE keys home.
3. Call a locksmith out to your house, especailly if you have a service that pays for such.
If the key does not match the door locks, then remove the dash and take that to the locksmith.- Top

Re: 68 ignition cylinder removal
The cylinder is usually taken out by putting a straightened out paper clip into the small hole on the face of the cylinder. But from what I remember, you need to have the key because you have to turn the cylinder to get it out. Hope you can find another key. I don't think a blank (non cut) key will work. Maybe someone els knows if this will work.

Re: 68 ignition cylinder removal
Don,
There may be an easy way to do this if you happen to have an old locksmth in your town. In the 60's, most locksmiths had what was called a "try out set" that consisted of 16 basic keys for all GM cars from the 40's to 1966. Most locks could be opened with one of the 16 keys. If not, there was also a complete 64 key set that was also common at the locksmith. In the 70's, I purchased several 63-67 complete instrument cluster assy's that had the ign switch and lock in place, but without keys. A trip to the old guy at his locksmith shop was all that was needed. Once the cyl was removed, a new key could be cut using the code stamped on the side of the cylinder.- Top

Mac,
I'm not sure if the "try out set" was also available for 69 but I suppose it could be. I remember the sets he had for GM cars through 68 with the hex head but I don't remember seeing the new larger rectangular head keys that 69 used.- Top
