I'm in the process of getting the AC on my '66 L36 coupe charged and running. I recently purchased a used rebuilt drier, but it has a different configuration than the unit currently on the car. I'm not sure if the existing unit is original, as it has been painted silver by a previous owner, so I suspect it could be a replacement. The current unit has a small shoulder near the top with a shape that is slightly reminicent of a glass milk bottle. The cond/evap outlets are correctly marked, and it has a sight glass. The rebuilt unit I also has the same markings and sight glass, but it has no shoulder like the above unit. In other words, it is a straight cylinder shape. Which one is correct? Each unit has numbers stamped on them: the unit on the car has numbers stamped on the top near an outlet, and the rebuilt unit has numbers stamped on the bottom. Neither stamping appears to follow typical code or julian date conventions. Should original units have date or part # stampings?

Re: C2: 1966 AC drier configuration
Have you read the Judging Guide? There were a couple versions of the receiver/dryer that changed over time. You're looking for the early version:
"The dhydrator or drier is a semi-gloss black cylinder attached to the right front of the core support via to black phosphate plated steel straps secured to small brackets on the core support. Original style hehydrator sight glasses are in the center of the top. A plastic plug is is inserted in the sight glass prior to painting and remains after assembly. Replacements often have the sight glass off center...."
The main difference between early and late versions is where the sight glass is located on the top boss of the drier (center vs. off center). The location of the sight glass, the drier's fit to its mounting bracket straps, proper length, and 'Cond' + 'Evap' emboss are the factors judges use to guage authenticity.- Top

Re: C2: 1966 AC drier configuration
I have a JG, but it's not as descriptive as it could be. It says that the drier should have a constant diameter, and that aftermarket units are sometimes smaller diameter. The unit on the car is the same as the new/rebuilt unit, and has a centered sight glass and evap/cond stamped on the inlet/outlets, but it has a shoulder at the top. Sounds like "constant diameter" means no shoulder - so looks like the unit on the car is a replacement.- Top

Re: C2: 1966 AC drier configuration
Dan - If the unit you are looking at looks like a "chug" milk bottle, it is not the original configuration. The original 3155342 Receiver/Dehydrator Assembly is 3" dia full length, 7", to where the top piece is welded. The site glass is centered in the top piece and the ports for the hose fitting adapters are marked "EVAP" and "COND" Pete- Top
