Can Anyone ID this Transmission Number?

3856436 ?? It's in my April 65 Build L79 that came with a Muncie Close ratio 4-spd and a 3:70 Axle Ratio. The speedo cable connects on the passenger side.

    Thanks!

Where are you finding this number? Is it on a metal tag attached by a transmission side cover bolt or is it somewhere else?

I can't find any record of the number, PRODUCTION or SERVICE. However, obviously it existed if you have it. The number looks like a later 1964-issued part number, so, from that perspective, it seems correct for the car. If the VIN-derivative stamped on the transmission matches the car, then it's the original transmission.

There existed once-upon-a-time a plethora of transmission part numbers, some recorded for posterity and some not. For a 1965 M-20 there were, of course, only 2 basic differences involving first gear ratio. So, why all the different part numbers I speak of? Well, that's because there were a large number of different combinations of speedometer DRIVE and DRIVEN gears used. Since these transmissions were supplied to the assembly plants as a complete unit, including installed speedometer gears, there had to be a different part number for each. For example, an M-20 for an L-79 could have been used with 3 different rear end ratios. So, there had to be 3 different transmissions with different speedometer gears to accomodate that requirement.

That transmission assembly number was used in '65 passenger cars - not used in Corvettes.

Thanks John .... Intersting, as I never had the transmission case replaced other having it's guts rebuilt in 1995. Is it possible they pull one of these units off the passenger line in a pinch back in April 1965? Or could the rebuild shop have mistakenly replace the wrong metal tag back in 1995. The stamped VIN number matches and I'm the original owner. It's a 65 L79 4-Spd with PS that originally came with 3:70 Posi gears.
