I'm cleaning up the last of my 66 body off restoration and am now grappling with the tachometer cable. I forgot to connect the cable into the back of the distributor which I should have done to test it before I installed the driver's seat and steering wheel-- just in case I had to disconnect it from the tach. The cable is connected to the tach and the tach registers whenever I turn the cable at the distributor side.
I did have to replace the tach gear inside the distributor and it was properly lubricated as part of the distributor servicing. However, the distributor end of the tach cable was frayed but I managed to carefully grind the end to where the cable end was squared. I also had to square the sides of the cable to fit into the distributor drive gear. The cable end sticking out beyond the sheath flange is about 1 in. I removed about 1/4 in. to clean up the end.
I cannot get the cable to start through the hole in the sidtributor brass fitting. Granted, it is not an easy access but I cannot get it started through. I've tried rotating the cable end sticking out but still cannot get it into the distributor.
Any comments?
