Re: Name this Part = HEAD
It's a small block head part number(3772895), group number 0.269. Not certain if it's a casting number or production part number. Chevrolet's Parts History publication issued October 1964 indicates this part number was removed from service. Email me off line and I'll send you a copy of the parts history.- Top

Re: Name this Part = HEAD
Franz and Justin------
Yes, it's a cylinder head and the number was used both as the casting # and cylinder head part #. However, I cannot find an application for it. It may be a 6 cylinder head or some other "oddball" piece. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Name this Part ???????
Justin,
The number doesn't appear in any of my old books going back to early 1963 but I can tell you that by the numerical value of the part number, it was introduced in roughly mid 1959. I have to guess that the number was discontinued or changed before 1965 as it doesn't even show in the 65 change book. It's not in the 1963 change book either. Need to find someone with a 1959 or 60 parts book.- Top

Re: Aluminum Heads
Aluminum head 315 HP 283's , to the best of my knowledge, were not released for regular production. Several years ago I had the pleasure of participating in the restoration of Briggs Cunningham's 1960 Le Mans car number 3 and accumulated an extensive reference file. Cunningham's three cars were originally fitted with aluminum heads, which performed poorly and during one of the practice sessions were replaced with regular production cast iron heads. These production heads were used thru the balance of practice and the Le Mans race. Porosity was a common problem resulting in leakers. Chevrolet's engineering representatives and team mechanics used a variety of products, without success, to seal a number of leaks. Other than bragging rights aluminum heads make great coffee tables.
Perhaps Loren would comment on Camoradi's experience with aluminum heads at Sebring and Le Mans.- Top

Re: Aluminum Heads
Franz-----
Yes, the fact that they were never used in PRODUCTION also explains why I was unable to find an application for them------officially, there never was an application.
However, apparently, these heads were available in SERVICE for a very short period. They were released for SERVICE sometime in late 1959 and were discontinued on March 1, 1960. They may have been listed in some early version of the "performance parts catalog" or otherwise through dealer parts bulletin. They were not catalogued in the regular Passenger and Corvette P&A Catalog. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

New Info, Coming Soon......
Just learned a LOT more about the history and availability of aluminum heads. With a little (lot) of help from Bob Jorjorian and his incredible amount of part number info and knowledge, it seems these heads WERE available in service. Also, the part number that Justin listed is not the original part number. More later as we sort through the info.- Top
