C-1 Transmission Seal

Any suggestions as how best to remove rear oil seal from 1958 T10 4/spd ? The old pry it out with a screw driver approach is not working. Also, should oil seal have a felt packing ? my old oil seal does but my replacement from Corvette Central does not.

Hi Dwight

There is a tool out there in the auto parts stores thats used to pull front seals.Cost is between $10 - $20. I do believe it will work for the tranny seal. As far as the packing, the new seal does not use it. I see no need for it.

John, thanks for the info. on the seal packing. I kind of thought that the new design did not call for packing. I agree with you that it is hard to see it's utility.
As to removing the seal I believe that who ever installed the seal must have used gasket compound or some sealant during intallation. It will not budge and I have used a slide hammer to no avail. All I have been successful in doing is destroying the metal around the seal. Do you think that removing the tail piece might allow me to drive it out from the inside ? hard to tell by viewing from the outside but it does not look like that will work either.

Try taking a long screwdriver with a small flat end and tap it in-between the seal housing and the tailshaft. This will collapse the seals outer edge and it should pop right out. Rob
