    ORIGINAL 40083 AC FUEL PUMP

I recently installed an original, rebuilt 40083 AC fuel pump on my '66 small block. I has started leaking and fuel can be seen seeping out on the top. I'll be removing it to rebuilt it. Is there anything in particular that I might look for, or does the rebuilt kit pretty much take care of whatever might be causing the leaking?

I can see fuel seeping out of the small holes in the top of the fuel pump.

      Rob,

When I did my 4657 pump I had a machine shop broach the surfaces just to make sure everything is flat. I don't want to full around with any fuel leaks in this area.

The pump operated fine and did not leak for about 2 months. I can't find anyone locally(S. CAL.) that carries a rebuilt kit.

          Rob,

The screws that secure the main flange are very small and have a fine thread. Sometimes these threads will strip thus causing a loose fit at the flange.

I have an early 66 327/300 engine and installed a 4657 pump on it. There has been a lot of debate about the 40083 vs 4657 fuel pump on the early 66 SB as referenced in the JM. Nolan Adams's book states that only the 4657 was used on the 66 SB.

          Regards,

            Dave,

I'll check the screws when I remove the pump. (I didn't specify in my post, but my car is a 350HP, which I believe uses the 40083)

Paragon carries a fuel pump rebuild kit rifle shot at 40083 pumps. Check them out on their PN 496K. Understand, today's rebuild kits differ slightly from factory original parts (exact construction & geometry of diaphram, same for lower seal, precise head style of body attaching screws, Etc.) and some judges look very closely at fuel pumps...

                Dave,

The Adam's book also says that the 40083 was used on all SB cars with A/C. My late '66 300hp with air has the 40083.
